PCC UK Shoot Out - 20th July 2002
Our first major club shoot out saw the national Performance Car Club (PCC)
coming to Minimaster. Twelve owners turned up on a fine Saturday morning to have
their vehicles placed on the rolling road.
Our engineers first inspect the vehicle and its engine; this comprises checking
the compression, oil and water levels, tyre pressures, and making an
assessment of the general state of the car to avoid any unnecessary mishaps.
Cars are then put on the rolling road for the session.
The session itself comprises running up the vehicle to a suitable gear
(usually third gear), and taking measurements of the power, speed and revs
at approximately 500 rpm increments between 2500 rpm and 6000 rpm. At all
times, the emissions and engine temperature are monitored. Vehicles are
left to cool in between short runs. Tests of cars showing any adverse
symptoms are immediately abandoned.
On the left is Mr. Freestone's 1.4i Astra. After fixing the throttle so that
it opened fully, we managed to get a maximum power of 69 bhp (as opposed to
62 bhp before) - not bad for a standard 1.4i Astra.
On the right is Mr Dobbie's 2.0l 16v Nova Sfi. This produced an impressive
122 bhp at 6500 rpm. However, Mr Simson's 2.0l Nova 16v (below) won the day
with an unbeatable 135bhp at 6500 rpm. Interest was intense as the maximum
power was recorded.
All the results were noted down and put into our spreadsheets where the
graphs were plotted. Each graph shows power at given revs, and the corresponding
unadjusted torque calculated from the revs and power. The
summary chart shows all results compared. Please note that this is a PDF
file. You can get the Acrobat PDF viewer from Adobe web site.
The day went very successfully with all contenders expressing their
satisfaction and gratitude for an interesting and exciting day. We look
forward to their return visit in the near future.
