Five mini enthusiasts visited the Performance Centre following a weekend of runs around
Cumbria as part of the Mad Mini Lakes Tour. With the weather nice and sunny, we went about
checking the minis over to make sure they were OK.
As per our standard process, we check the vehicle state to make sure its OK to put
on the rolling road. We check the oil, tyres, tyre pressure, spark plugs, compression
and water/cooling. We then run it up without load to check mixture to ensure its not
running weak. When all is OK, we run them at given RPM and measure the speed and power.
From this we can then calculate the torque.
In no particular order...
Mike's mini went on the rollers with a standard 1000cc engine. First run resulted in
a peak power of 23 bhp at 3000 rpm. After a quick tune, we got it up to 26 bhp
at 4000 rpm, with an increase in torque of 36 lbft across a greater rev range.
John's comment: needs tune; there is still plenty to come from it.
Mr. Wallwark's Italian Job was plotted. This has a 1275cc engine with a stage 1 kit.
It delivered 39 bhp at 4500 rpm, but the torque dropped off throughout the range
showing that it was needing a tune.
John's comment: needs tune as too rich a needle.
Phil's mini was up next. It is a standard 1275 MPI. It peaked at 37 bhp at 4000 rpm but dropped
off at the end for some strange reason.
John's comment: seems OK, but lost 8 bhp somewhere.
Finally, Carl's 1000cc mini was put on the rollers, but the results were overwritten
somehow - thanks George!
We'll dig out the originals at some stage and update the site.
Sorry.
